Today one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, the Cluniac Sites and Grand site Burgundy village Semur-en-Brionnais is located on top of a rocky hill rising to 400 meters. This geographical situation does nothing to chance. There are 1000 years the site is chosen to establish a castle to defend the territory. This castle is the oldest of Burgundy.
The first lords of Semur edify first massive square keep the tenth and eleventh centuries and other towers flanked on its wall with two round towers of defense in the twelfth century with entrance drawbridge. This castle is the starting point for building the fortress of Semur throughout the Middle Ages. Uptown, bounded by a second wall which remains a postern, protect the castle, the beautiful Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire, the salt loft where you pay the salt tax and the audience justice (rebuilt in 1780). The lower town, residential area farmers, grows on the northern slope, near the castle. A third wall protects the fourteenth century. His poterne is also preserved.
Today, the high city (or the historic market town) keeps all these medieval monuments and other built later as the minor seminary built in 1830 today rehabilitated into a convent, and the lower town that retains its configuration and alleys but medieval timber-framed houses were burned during the centuries!
