Sceaux-sur-Huisne is a commune in the Sarthe in Pays de la Loire, 12 km southwest of La Ferte-Bernard.

Crossed by the course of the Huisne, a tributary of the Sarthe and sub-tributary of the Loire, and more recently, on its northern part, by the A11 (called Océane), the territory of the city has an area 11 km². It belongs to the natural region of Perche which the transition between Armorican and Paris Basin, deemed to be green, rolling quietly and for its fertile soil.

Already occupied in ancient times (as evidenced important remains), the town developed in the Middle Ages after land clearance that permitted the development of agriculture and gave the landscape its wooded character. Long disputed between the kings of France and England, the region Sceaux-sur-Huisne definitely integrates the kingdom in 1430.

Although the victim of the rural exodus and counting more than some 580 inhabitants, where the town is located remains an important production unit rillettes prosperous and kept a heritage interest. Enough to justify a step during a stay in the region, let alone if one has also likes hiking in a bucolic setting.

Things to see and do

A tour of the village and the hamlets the rub can be instructive, especially following the factsheet available from the Tourist Office and the City (Contact +33 2 43 71 21 21 ou +33 2 43 93 40 12).

Manor Court, the seat of an ancient manor, is an excellent starting point for the discovery of heritage: its oldest parts date from the fourteenth century. Mullioned windows, beautifully made chimneys attest. The building was probably built on Gallo-Roman foundations, ancient baths remains have been unearthed below the field.

A picturesque wash house, a Romanesque bridge, a priory of which remains the tithe barn where were stored Taxes in kind (including the structure dates back to XVI) are then observed, before turning to the nearby church of St. Germain, listed on the Inventory, known especially for its bell tower saddle (with a double-pitched roof). It dates to its oldest parts of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, but has undergone many alterations. Current openings have redone the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. As the choir and the bell tower, they were erected during the first half of the sixteenth century under a late Gothic style. Carvings are still visible at the top of the tower. Inside, the entire wall of the chancel is occupied by a large altarpiece of the eighteenth century, and the church has also a rich statuary of various materials from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Are represented as Saint Sebastian (wood), St. Barbara (clay), St. Roch (plaster) or St. Léonfort (stone). Note also the beautiful door leading to the sacristy (late sixteenth century or early seventeenth).

The tour continues with the old rectory to the west of the town (XVI carved elements), the hotel of the Cane (1840) which shows that Sceaux-sur-Huisne already stood then on a busy road leading to Le Mans, the home called the Princetière (1862) to the architecture inspired by the Renaissance and which belonged a time to the family who ran the Lego company or the town sheltered in a noble house of the eighteenth century. Finally, the house called the Chalet aux Roses (XIX), said home Ceramics because of its decorations (XIX and XX) and especially the Castle Rock conclude this overview: the building protected as historical monuments was built in the late eighteenth century when the center of a vast agricultural area and a leisure park. The facades and the old chapel on the ground floor of the northwest tower are particularly noteworthy. Alas, the property is private and can not be visited.

In terms of leisure and "nature" sports, noting that the town has south of the town of a plain and an orchard from which has come to games for young children, a track, a multi-sports field and a picnic area.
