The Museum of Rohan Castle presents rich archaeological Gallo-Roman and medieval collections discovered in and around Saverne. It consists of three sections: art and history, Louise Weiss and archeological.
Art and history section: The art and history collection is very varied and covers many areas: paintings, graphic arts, collections of Alsatian costumes presented by rotation, polychrome wood carvings of the 15th and 16th centuries from churches in the region of Saverne and a room devoted to the history of the castle.
Section Louise Weiss: To honor her Alsatian ties (her family was from La Petite-Pierre near Saverne), journalist Louise Weiss (1893-1983) donated her collections in 1981 and 1983 to the museum of Saverne (objects ethnographic, paintings, drawings, decorative arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and personal archives). The rooms devoted to Louise Weiss make it possible to understand the premises of the European construction by discovering the avant-garde political projects that she supported between 1919 and 1934 in her review of international politics New Europe.
Archeological section: In the vaulted cellars of the castle, the museum houses a rich archaeological collection with many Gallo-Roman funerary and votive steles. Many stelae were incorporated in the construction of the stone enclosure at the beginning of the fourth century. This is the second lapidary collection in Alsace after the Strasbourg museum.
Temporary exhibitions are regularly offered.
