Nestling at the edge of Lomagne, the charming circuluar medieval town of Sarrant features on the list of the most beautiful villages of France. Its 14th-century fortified door, the old door to the town crowned with a square tower, pretty houses with corbels and timber frames, and its Church of St. Vincent, crowned with an octagonal spire, are some of the attractions to be discovered on a leisurely stroll.

A medieval garden with old vegetable varieties and aromatic and medicinal plants rounds off the visit very nicely.

An exceptional heritage...

Circular in form, the village, built around its church, was founded in the thirteenth century. It was built on an ancient site on the maps of the Roman Empire.

One penetrates into the enclosure by a remarkable tower door of 14th century ogival town with three floors, classified in 1927.

The church of Saint-Vincent, in southern Gothic style, was built in fine stones from the thirteenth century and enlarged at the end of the reign of Henri IV. A pretty little Renaissance door, dated 1530, adorns its northern wall. Inside, the painted decoration is from the late nineteenth century as well as the west facade and bell tower.

Facing the city gate, the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Pitie, built in the 17th century, contains a moving Piéta from the 16th century, gilded with gold leaf.

Not far from the village, overlooking the Gimone, rise the towers of the castle of Savaillan (16th century), still imbued with the glory of its most famous occupant Denis de Mauléon, valiant companion in arms of King Henri de Navarre, future King of France.
