The Château de Versas is located in the town of Sanilhac, in the department of Ardèche, 30 km south-west of Aubenas by road.
It is located in the hamlet of Versas, below the ruins of the Château de Brison devastated during the Revolution and the Tour de Brison, a medieval fortification.
The Château de Versas itself, halfway between Sanilhac and Vernon, dominates the landscape as far as Joyeuse and the confluence of the courses of the Chassezac and the Ardèche.
This stronghold mentioned as early as 1301 was owned by the lords of Montbrison and remained so until the beginning of the 17th century. A few years earlier, heiress of the place, Françoise de Bernard de Montbrison had married in 1594 the noble Noë de Lamartiniére. He was to die in 1603 after carrying out considerable work on the castle. Spared during the Revolution, the estate was owned by a pastor at the beginning of the 20th century, in this region where Protestantism remained very much alive.
Nowadays, the castle consists of two wings on either side of an octagonal tower, which is protected as a historical monument. The building is renowned for its superb Renaissance style façade (16th century). A dovecote is located in the park.
