Carved out of lava in the heart of the high country, the Saint-Mathieu church of Salers, in Cantal, is one of the architectural gems of Haute Auvergne. Located in the heart of a city classified among the most beautiful villages in France, over 300 meters high, it proudly dominates the Maronne valley.
Installed outside the original city, the Saint-Mathieu church was originally a very beautiful Romanesque building of which only few vestiges remain. Largely rebuilt between the 16th and 19th centuries, it is now in the late Gothic style, with the exception of its bell tower, portal and porch, which are older.
Inside, visitors will be able to admire a rich and refined decor, including a 15th century Entombment, 17th century Aubusson tapestries and many beautiful paintings and other altarpieces.
The entire building has been classified as a Historic Monument since the mid-1990s.
