Ardeche village of about 600 inhabitants, Salavas is in the southern department, facing Vallon-Pont-d'Arc on the banks of the river. Surrounded by forest, the village has a remarkable historical heritage and an exceptional nature.

With its picturesque charm, Salavas passing visitors attracted by its exceptional view of the surroundings, as well as the many medieval remains it houses. But its main attraction is its medieval archaeological site registered under the Historic Monuments since the early 1980s.

The lush surrounding nature is ideal for walks and other excursions to discover the wonders of southern Ardèche and the mysteries of the culture and traditions of the city of Salavas.

Things to see and do

The main tourist attraction is Salavas its medieval architectural heritage that recalls the glorious past of the Ardèche city.

Listed historical monument, the medieval site is the opportunity to admire many remains. It is thus possible to appreciate the remains of the churches of Saint-Julien and Saint-Jean and Saint Anne's chapel. Cemetery until the nineteenth century, the site hosted a new church without steeple and a temple, following the destruction of the ancient churches by Protestants in 1568. One can admire the bell of 1848 the new church St. -Julien, on the forecourt.

Castle Salavas presents an interesting exhibition in the lower hall, on funeral practices and archaeological items found on the archaeological site of the medieval town.

Nature trails allow visitors to discover the attractions of Salavas and all its charms. Thus, the circuit of Roche and the circuit of Maltourne show an old bread oven, a gazebo with tables of orientation, of the Mill tower which housed soldiers or later a power plant, or the fountain of Augier. Also note the presence of Salavas bridge that allows today to cross the river Ardeche.

Events and festivities

Lively and full of life, the village of Salavas regularly offers events and demonstrations.

Throughout the year, a market of producers, artisans and local artists takes place on Tuesday late afternoon and Sunday morning in July and August. Every first Sunday of May, a flower market sets in, while in July and August, the village of Salavas include a cozy night market with many animations.

Each July, Salavas and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc are the scene of Mome Z'émerveille festival. The program for this exceptional event, exciting entertainment for children and their parents, with workshops, exhibitions or street performances. Everything turned to paleontology and prehistory, for learning to make fire without matches or huts skins.

Always in summer, free and village tours are offered on Wednesdays and Fridays.
