The village of Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre, dominated by the ruins of its keep, is famous for having served as the set for the famous Jacques Tati movie Jour de Fête in 1947. The market square, which was used as a backdrop in the film, is very pretty with its 17th-century covered market, 15th-century fortified door and 16th-century wayside cross.

Jacques Tati fans must make a point of visiting the Maison de Jour de Fête, an entertaining museum space dedicated to the illustrious actor/director's work.

A market takes place under and around the covered market every Wednesday morning.

Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre

Small village of Indre, in the Center-Val de Loire region, Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre takes place in the Boischaut Sud, near Pouligny-Notre-Dame, Vigoulant or La Motte-Feuilly.

Known today for having hosted the shooting of Jacques Tati's famous film, Jour de fête, the town of Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre was already populated since Antiquity, as evidenced by the remains of the Bronze Age found there. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War and taken over by Du Guesclin in the second half of the 19th century, the city then had a turbulent history.

Today quieter, the village presents a mainly tourist activity, in particular thanks to its authentic setting which lends itself to strolling. A beautiful architectural heritage is to be discovered in this city with multiple attractions.

Things to see and do

Rebuilt in the 19th century on the remains of two medieval churches, the Sainte-Sévère church was built in an interesting Burgundy Romanesque style. Imposing in its dimensions, it reveals in particular a vaulted nave with side aisles and a choir opening onto a semi-circular apse.

Not far away, it is possible to discover the old castle today occupied by a retirement home, as well as the keep. The only vestige of an ancient 13th century medieval castle, it is partly destroyed but still has some machicolations.

While strolling through the village, visitors will also be able to admire other vestiges of medieval heritage such as the market gate. Do not miss to linger on the 17th century mansions of the old town, the turreted houses or the market hall. Built at the end of the 17th century, the latter has undergone a major restoration campaign which has restored it to all its splendor.

Impossible to leave the premises without going through the Maison de Jour de Fête, a scenographic space which retraces the history of Jacques Tati's work.
