Sainte-Eulalie-en-Born is a town in the Landes, in the New Aquitaine region, 78 km north-west of Mont-de-Marsan, and bordering Mimizan to the south.
The vast municipal territory of 70 km² is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, unfortunately inaccessible, and covers the southern tip of the Parentis-Biscarrosse pond to the north. The Landes forest, planted mainly with maritime pines, constitutes the main part of the landscape and cultivated areas, forestry having for centuries been the economic engine of the locality with sheep farming.
A stage on the way to Santiago de Compostela, the parish has been mentioned since the Middle Ages. From the second half of the 20th century, Sainte-Eulalie-en-Born, which now has nearly 1,450 inhabitants according to the 2022 census, has also become a popular vacation spot thanks to the beach on Lake Parentis-Biscarrosse and its preserved environmental framework.
In terms of historical and architectural heritage, we will discover with interest the town where the town hall which once housed the boys' school dates from the 19th century and forms with other public buildings such as the old post office a coherent and typical whole of the region. Nearby, the Place de la Grange bordered by plane trees is friendly and popular with the population during the organization of local festivals and events.
Both at the level of the town and the hamlets, real old Landes houses with a wooden framework forming half-timberings are still visible.
A step is essential to the church whose foundations date back to the 13th century and could have been erected by knights of the Order of Malta. Only the choir is original. The building was indeed restored in the 19th century and then rebuilt after the Second World War during which it partially collapsed. Inside, in addition to a polychrome wooden statue of Saint-Eutrope from the 18th century, there is a splendid fresco evoking a Pietà by the painter Archiguille, produced in 1976 and restored by the artist - whose works appear in a number of collections. exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art - in 2006.
In the village, still, in addition to a 19th century wash house, to see, the manor of Probert, dating from the 17th century, having notably belonged to the writer and politician Paul Déroulède then to Paul Sargos, Nobel Peace Prize winner, co-founder of Médecins sans Frontières.
Besides the forest and the "tuc" (height) of Castet, the other part of the local heritage is linked to its natural setting. This is the case of the "current", that is to say the river which crosses the village for 8 km to connect the lakes of Parentis-Biscarrosse to the north and that of Aureilhan to the south. Two dams have been built there to regulate the levels of the two lakes. Around them, marsh areas are protected for their fauna (herons, ducks, nutria, pond terrapins, otters) and their flora (swamp iris, royal fern, water clover, yellow water lilies).
For cycling enthusiasts, part of the "La Vélodyssée" cycle path connects the town to the lake beach (south coast of Lake Parentis-Biscarrosse). This cycle path runs along the French ocean coast from Roscoff to Hendaye and is interconnected with other circuits in the national territory.
