The Annonciade museum is located at Saint-Tropez, in the Var. It was created in 1922 and since 1950 it has been housed in the chapel of the Annonciade, in the center of the famous village, near the port.
Its vocation is to recall that Saint-Tropez was an active center of avant-garde painting at the beginning of the 20th century, after Paul Signac acquired a house there with his workshop. The artist fell in love with the site in 1892. Signac then invited painters such as Derain, Matisse and Marquet to Saint-Tropez.
Several dozen canvases are on display at the museum, some of which are internationally renowned, covering the period from 1890 to 1950. Works mainly from the Pointillist, Nabis and Fauve movements are exhibited.
Bonnard, Seurat, Dufy, Vallotton, Maillol and De Vlaminck are also among the artists of which at least one canvas is preserved.
The other interest of the museum is its unique setting. Erected in 1510, the Notre-Dame de l'Annonciade chapel was served by white penitents in charge in particular of redeeming the sailors from Saint-Tropez who had been slaves to the barbarians…
Decommissioned during the Revolution, the chapel housed the first collections of the municipal museum in 1937 then was transformed into a museum of modern art by Georges Grammont in 1950.
A temporary exhibition is also offered each year.
