Saint-Sever-de-Rustan is located on the left bank of the Arros and the site has been frequented since prehistoric times. Very early around the year 800, an abbey, which will be attached to Cluny, is built. This abbey promotes the birth of the fortified town which quickly becomes the capital of the country of Rustan. In 1573, the ancient Romanesque abbey was destroyed by the Protestants. The monks restored it in the 17th century, then with pomp in the 18th century before it was sold as national property after the Revolution. The abbey cloister was purchased in 1889 by the city of Tarbes and is currently located in the Massey garden. For all visitors to the abbey, a visit to the village is a useful and pleasant addition. You can discover the old ramparts, the old Gascon houses, the old bridge which spans the Arros. A picnic area has been set up on the banks of the Arros.
