Former monastery of the order of Grandmont located in the town of Saint-Privat, in the Hérault, the priory Saint-Michel de Grandmont takes place at 440 meters above sea level about ten kilometers from Lodève.
The building, listed as a Historical Monument, is one of the best preserved monasteries of the order of Grandmont founded in the second half of the eleventh century and dissolved in the late eighteenth century. Having become an agricultural exploitation following the French Revolution, then place of viticultural production, the priory Saint-Michel de Grandmont is today open to the public.
One can still admire a church of the twelfth century single nave vaulted cradle, and a cloister from the mid-thirteenth century. The latter has kept its four galleries supported by double columns. They open on the kitchen and the chapter room. The dormitories of the monks, upstairs, have been remodeled in modern times.
Each year, during the summer season, the Saint-Michel de Grandmont priory is the theater of exhibitions, and concerts organized in the church because of its incredible acoustics. Themed tours and special tours for children are also available throughout the year.
