Discover, at the entrance to the Sainte-Beaume gorges in southern Ardèche, the beautiful medieval village of Saint-Montan, which has been admirably restored, with charming little sloping streets dotted with pretty stone façades. At the peak of the village are the remains of a great feudal Castle, which was said to be impregnable. Having strolled along the Saint-Montan streets, you can amble around the scented "curate's" garden, then go back to the road towards Larnas and its Romanesque church, to explore the unspoilt, craggy countryside of the Sainte-Beaume gorges.

Charming little village of character in Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Saint-Montan is located not far from Châteauneuf-du-Rhône, Donzère or Bourg-Saint-Andéol. Located at the entrance to the Sainte-Baume gorges, this charming medieval town is full of monuments to discover during your stay in Ardèche.

Populated since the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by the remains found during excavation campaigns, the territory of Saint-Montan mainly developed in the Middle Ages. Heavily affected by the wars of religion, including its occupation by the army of Gaspard II de Coligny, the town also expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries under the aegis of a brotherhood of White Penitents.

Focused on crafts and tourism, the town of Saint-Montan today attracts many visitors wishing to enjoy both its architectural and historical heritage and its breathtaking view of the region.

Things to see and do

Located outside the village, the church of San Samonta consists of two distinct parts, a chapel of the tenth century and twelfth Romanesque church. Ranked Historic Monument, the site has seen a few changes over the centuries but retained its charm and authenticity.

Built in the bottom of the old town, the church of Sainte-Madeleine was rebuilt many times today with a nineteenth century architecture. From the original building, it still remains the bells or an engraved inscription.

It also classified historic monument, the St. Andrew Mitroys chapel was completed in the twelfth century. Fully restored in the 1970s, she reveals on its side a parcel lined with cypress trees representing the old cemetery.

Walking through the village, you can also explore the remains of the ancient castle, the cave of "Lourdes", the loft of the castle on the cliff, or the garden of the priest with his botanical curiosities.
