The Château des Charreaux is located in the town of Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil, in the Dordogne, 40 km northeast of Périgueux.
This medieval building, which was the residence of several nobles of the region, such as the Pasquets, the Charreaux and then the Chavoix family, is located on a hillside.
Most of it was dismantled or destroyed during the Revolution. Whereas it previously comprised a main building with two towers, a pavilion and a number of outbuildings, all that remains now is a circular tower pierced with skylights resting on battlements. There is also a door in the form of a turret, a watch tower and a pepper pot.
After the purchase of the domain in 1818, a simpler house was built next to the remains of the medieval castle.
The site is however listed in the Inventory as an example of ancient fortified architecture. Moreover, the Tower is now more often mentioned than the Château des Charreaux.
The property is private and is not open or public. The domain can however mark out a pleasant walk in this locality in the heart of green Périgord.
