The priory of La Madeleine de Boumois is located in the new town of Gennes-Val-de-Loire, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, 10 km north-west of Saumur.
Located in the village of Saint-Martin-de-la-Place, near the castle of Boumois (but on the other side of the RD 952), it is a chapel which was built at the beginning of the 12th century by the lord of the place, Maurice Roinard. When the latter decided to enter orders around 1120 within the abbey of Saint-Florent de Saumur, he donated it to this same monastery.
The abbey then established a priory there, but which was already in a state of vestiges at the end of the 18th century.
All that remained was the elongated chapel, consisting of a single nave probably covered with paneling and equipped with a choir with a cul-de-four apse. The seemingly modest building was, however, built of freestone and freestone and covered with slate.
In the 19th century, the church was transformed into a dwelling, and the frame was partly burnt down in 1975.
Nowadays, restored, this testimony of the priory, registered in the Inventory, is a private property. Its exteriors can be observed during a walk in a bucolic setting, between the Château de Boumois and the course of the Loire. Information on +33 2 41 51 09 10.
