The Clock Tower in the town of Saint-Martin-de-Brômes, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, 6 km north-east of Gréoux-les-Bains, was built in 1227.
It is about 'a 24 m high keep built on a spur, north of the village. It is improperly that the monument is sometimes locally called "tower of the Templars" because its origin is in no way linked to the order of the Temple: it is Boniface de Castellane, the lord of the place, who decided on its construction. to make it both a defensive watchtower and a warehouse to store taxes in kind…
In the 19th century, although topped with battlements and a parapet, the tower built in freestone limestone was converted into a dovecote. A campanile and its bell were finally installed at the top in 1866.
Listed as a Historic Monument in 1921, the tower has housed since 1972 on its ground floor a small Gallo-Roman museum where burials and ancient objects are exposed. during roadworks (open from June 15 to September 15 except Tuesdays).
