Catalan town taking place at the heart of Vallespir, Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans is located in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Located in the canton of Canigou, near Céret or Tech, the town can discover the charms of the French Catalonia.

One that is named after a martyr, St. Lawrence, and a people who occupied the region in the Middle Ages, Cerdans, today is a tourist site popular with visitors. Authentic and preserved, the town of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans remains famous in the rest of the country for its Catalan weaving, as well as its renowned Vigatanes.

Its architectural heritage, but also cultural, brings a lot to this town that does not lack charm and highlights its ancient traditions.

Things to see and do

With its Catalan architecture and warm, bright colors, the common Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans seduces visitors wanting to discover authentic Catalonia.

Listed historical monument, the farmhouse of Crémadells was built between the seventeenth and eighteenth century. One can still admire the ruins of the chapel built in the mid-seventeenth century.

A museum of art and popular traditions presents the history of the town, including a room dedicated to the sneaker industry, and space with the Retirada, the flight of Spanish Republicans under Franco.

While strolling through the streets of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, visitors can experience the charm of the castle of Ille, nineteenth century building, the Notre-Dame-de-la-Out, built in the eighteenth century or the Church Saint-Laurent and the ruins of the chapel of the Muga de Dalt.

The sneaker factory, Catalan creation, can be visited on request, to discover the secrets of one of the specialties of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans.

Events and festivities

Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, town close to its traditions, offers a unique event of its kind.

In early February, the feast of the bear takes place at the carnival. This event is included in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage in France and illustrates the capture of bears in the streets of the town. A dinner show, a parade or a disguised hunting bears, and are scheduled for this exceptional event.

The third Sunday of Lent, the town offers its annual fair.

Festivities of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans take place on 10 August and 8 September, while the communal celebrations are held at Easter and Pentecost.

The market takes place all year on Saturday mornings.
