Town located in Rhône-Alpes, Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert is the sixth city in the Loire department. It was born from the merger of Saint-Just-sur-Loire and Saint-Rambert-sur-Loire in 1973. Located a few kilometers from Saint-Etienne, near the gorges of the Loire, Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert has a certain charm as well as a rich and interesting past. Part of the city dates in fact from the Gallo-Roman times, and was formerly called Occiacum. A well-preserved heritage reflects the great epochs of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert and its importance in this part of France.
Consisting of over 14 000 inhabitants, the town of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert however still has the attractions of a country town, with its greenery and its friendly atmosphere. Simple and lively, this city of the Loire attracts visitors with its soothing environment and its natural setting.
City Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert hosts within it a rich and interesting heritage that shows all the antiquity of this city on the Loire. Located on the banks of the river, it also has a natural heritage full of splendor.
Classified as an historic monument, the church of Saint-Rambert date eleventh and twelfth centuries. Often modified in its architecture over the centuries, it forms with the priory that extends it, a set that was the monastery of Gallo-Roman village, Occiacum. On one of the purest Romanesque style, this church called Saint-André, especially worth seeing for its two beautiful towers.
In the same neighborhood of Saint-Rambert, the St. John chapel was listed as an historic monument. Built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it houses under the ground of bodies buried after the plague in the Middle Ages.
The door of the Franchise was listed as an historic monument in 1929. According to local legend, Francis I spent the night there during one of his travels through France in 1536. It owes its name to an asylum enjoyed by offenders who entered the former priory. When they crossed the threshold, they were exempt from prosecution.
Built in the eleventh century, Grangent Castle is on an island in the center of the lake of the same name. Its tower, then the whole site was listed as Historic Monuments. This is a private property that can not be visited.
Devoted to primitive art, the museum of civilizations Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert not lack of interest. It presents to the public fine collections of various objects and other works of art.
Sensitive Natural Area classified and Natura 2000, David pond does not lack charm. It covers about 27 hectares and has also been identified as a natural area of ecological interest, flora and fauna. One can in particular discover over 130 species of birds, and nearly 150 plant species.
Vibrant and full of life, the city of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert annually hosts very interesting events.
After the merger, the city has retained typical markets for each of its neighborhoods: Saturday morning in Saint-Just neighborhood, Thursday and Sunday morning in the neighborhood Saint-Rambert. Every Sunday, the shops are open in the center of Saint-Rambert and the streets become pedestrian in the morning.
In March, the Râpée Party takes place in the city with a cabaret show, dinner and dancing.
In the summer, Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert offers its traditional feast Wednesday. On this occasion, free activities are offered to all audiences. Concerts, dance hall or fireworks are organized as well.
In October, a celebration of the rich beer tastings and other events is available.
