- Its location:
- Saint-Jeannet is a village in the Alpes-Maritimes in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Located twenty miles from Nice, between Gattières, Vence and La Gaude.
- The village is perched at the foot of the baou Saint-Jeannet (800 m), ("rock" in Provençal), a cliff that attracts many hikers and climbers, and dominates the valley of the Cagne where stand the ruins of an ancient walled sheepfold, the Castellet. At the top of Bau, a viewpoint, built in the early 1950s, tells the walkers, who can see below the village and off a magnificent panorama stretching from the Mercantour Alps to Nice hills, until Antibes, the Lerins Islands and Esterel mountains.
- History:
- The history of Saint-Jeannet remains uncertain, but official documents bear witness to several villages, at the foot of Sancti Johannis Baou Alagoda and the plain, from the 11th century.
- It can be seen today along the facades of houses forming the medieval walls, doors at the end of streets, the door of the Powder, Contardy the door, the door Sainte Barbe, the door of Shoeing, which protected the inhabitants of attacks and epidemics. Saint-Jeannet was a village border between Provence and the County of Nice.
- Its gastronomy:
- The wine Saint-Jeannet, including white, is very popular with large tables of the Côte d'Azur, Jacques Prévert made it a poem.
- The bean pie is the specialty of the village of Saint-Jeannois.
- Its artists:
- Many artists have settled in Saint-Jeannet captivated by the tranquility and charm of classic landscape.
- The most famous of them is Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes which was in turn, poet, writer, playwright, designer and talented. He lived here from 1944 until 1974, when he died. Through him, the village was hit late by the Dada and Surrealism.
- The wonderful setting of the village was painted by leading artists such as Chagall, Dufy, Matisse ...
