A renowned holiday resort on the west coast of Réunion, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains attracts a good many tourists in search of relaxation, leisure and entertainment. Popular with children and grown-ups alike, it has five exhibition areas displaying wildlife from the lagoon and coral reefs, ranging from fish to sharks, through corals, lobsters and seahorses.

In Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, you can also take a stroll in a wonderful English-style landscaped garden of two-and-a-half hectares, the Jardin d'Éden park, home to around 700 tropical plant species! A haven of peace and tranquillity that's ideal for relaxation, where bamboo, palm trees, cactus and other rare or native plants thrive…

Common on the west coast of the island of Reunion, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains takes place on the communal territory of St. Paul. Main seaside resort of the island, it unveils the most frequented beaches and serves as coastline to the commune of Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, in the heights of Reunion.

Also called Zoreiland because of the large number of tourists and officials who stay there, the town of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is popular with locals and visitors. It was completely destroyed in the early twentieth century due to a fire, and is now rebuilt.

Located about thirty kilometers south of Saint-Denis, the city of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the ideal place to explore the island and appreciate all its charms.

Things to see and do

Botanical Garden, the Garden of Eden was created in 1990 by an agronomist passionate about botany. Designed in English, it requires one to three hours of visit to discover the 700 tropical plant species it hosts. It extends over 2.5 hectares and takes place right next to the marsh of the Hermitage.

Spot very practiced by surfers, the beach of Roches Noires is a beach of white sand two kilometers long. It welcomes each year the fire of King Dodo during the carnival of the town.

Do not miss either to visit the marina to admire the boats and enjoy the atmosphere, or visit the aquarium of Reunion. Located on an artificial island, it allows to discover the fauna of the lagoon or that of the drop-offs. You can admire more than 700 fish from 180 different species, as well as lobsters, corals or seahorses.

Boucan Canot beach is also very popular with families due to the presence of a natural pool of black lava rocks.

Rich in shops, restaurants, bars and other night clubs, the town of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains attracts by its activity and its dynamism that extends to the end of the night.

The fairground market of the Hermitage is held every Sunday morning.

The Total Jazz Festival is held in April with high-energy concerts.

Each year, during the austral winter, the Roches Noires beach welcomes the willful fire of the giant King Dodo, when the Grand Boucan, the Reunion carnival, crosses the town.

On December 20th, place at the Kaf party and its animations.

Unmissable, the open market of St. Paul, on the waterfront all day Friday and Saturday morning. Local and Indian Ocean crafts and fruits, vegetables and local products (vanilla, bourbon pointed coffee, coconuts, etc.) Ideal to soak up the tropical fruits, samosas and caps, also ideal to find souvenirs at prices more affordable.
