Saint-Georges-de-Commiers

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Isère

Saint-Georges-de-Commiers is a commune in the department of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, 20 km south of Grenoble.

Its territory of 14 km² oscillates from 286 to 1370 m of altitude, and fell under the Old regime of the province of Dauphiné.

The locality occupies a plateau dominating the right bank of the Drac, which constitutes its "western" limit, and includes the foothills of the Conest mountain, to the east. Its landscapes have remained green, made up of forests (67% of its area), meadows and agricultural areas (21%).

The town includes the town of Saint-Georges to the north, that of Saint-Pierre to the south and a district that appeared in the 19th century near the station.

The village developed in the Middle Ages, falling under a county belonging to the Alleman family, one of the most powerful in the region. In the 17th century, the seigniory was won by the Duke of Lesdiguières, who became Constable of France, and just before the Revolution the estate became the property of the Collaud de la Salette family for a time, which acquired a manor house.

Mainly active in agriculture, the town saw the establishment of a few industrial units at the end of the 19th century due to the proximity of the Houillères boosted by the railway.

Nowadays, Saint-Georges-de-Commiers has some 2200 inhabitants. Benefiting from the growth of the Grenoble agglomeration, the locality highlights its preserved environment and its leisure offer which deserve attention.

Things to see and do

The locality has preserved several sites of interest in terms of heritage. A discovery trail can start with the Saint-Georges church, which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. It was originally served by the canons of the monastery of the Prévôté de Saint Laurent d'Oulx (now located in Italy), to whom it was given by the bishop of Grenoble Saint Hugues in 1080. The building has remained representative of the primitive Romanesque style, with its nave covered with a semicircular cradle and its portal with a capital on which a hairy human mask is carved. The bell tower and the sacristy, later (17th century), complete the architecture of the church, consolidated by buttresses and listed in the Inventory.

In the former hamlet of Saint-Pierre, the church was rebuilt in a neo-Romanesque style in the 19th century, but its preserved 12th century bell tower is also protected as a historical monument. It is made up of several floors, one of which has small columns surmounted by finely decorated capitals.

Finally, still on the religious level, we can mention the Saint-Pierre oratory erected after the village was spared during an epidemic…

As far as civil heritage is concerned, the stronghold of Saint-Pierre Georges, built near the church in the 12th century by the Alleman family, was given a tower in the 14th century. The whole bears witness to the ancient history of the village, over which the Dauphin then had half authority over the Commiers region.

More recent, the Vialets manor, between Saint-Georges and Saint-Pierre, was built by the Collaud de la Salette family who had acquired the seigneury in the 18th century. Consisting of an elongated dwelling in the Dauphinois tradition flanked by a square tower, including a park planted with century-old cedars, the property is still private but can be observed from the outside...

On the cultural side, shows and associative events are scheduled regularly at the André Malraux socio-cultural center (contact +33 4 76 78 00 10) and activities are also offered at the library (information on +33 4 76 72 57 19).

For sports enthusiasts, many facilities are accessible to visitors to the town, including a "pump track" track with bumps and banked turns that mountain bike or BMX enthusiasts will appreciate: join +33 4 76 72 57 19.

On the playful leisure side again, a partly outdoor site is dedicated to paintball: inquire on +33 6 52 54 95 19.

Of course, all that remains is to enjoy the hilly or even mountainous but always green landscapes of the territory via walks on the banks of the Drac in parts classified as "natural reserve" for their biodiversity or obviously the first reliefs of Conest. Four marked trails have been traced in the town, highlighting its history and its landscapes (information punctuates the routes). Note that these loops have varying degrees of difficulty, for families or seasoned walkers.

It is also possible to consider larger routes to reach Grenoble in the north or the Vercors in the west, for example. Maps and information on +33 4 76 72 57 19 or +33 4 76 42 41 41.
