Chic suburb of Montpellier, Saint-Gély-du-Fesc is a charming town stretching between the Mediterranean Sea and nature in Occitania region. The village has grown somewhat in recent years, notably thanks to a couple of stars, Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, who decided to establish their second home there. Also, Saint-Gély-du-Fesc has greatly benefited from the notoriety of these people to establish its high-end side. Half way between the Cevennes and the Mediterranean, the town seduces by its magnificent landscape bordered by hills peaking at 200 meters above sea level, its surrounding garrigue and its proximity to the sea.
As early as the 13th century, its history mingled with other surrounding municipalities attached to the castle of Montferrand. But the traces of the Neolithic found in three distinct places on the commune suggest that the places had been inhabited for a long time. Its name could come from Saint-Gilles l'Hermite. But here again, a mystery hovers around this hypothesis that one moves cautiously.
The sweetness of life is not the only delight of Saint-Gély-du-Fesc. You can taste licorice Chabernac honey, a specialty combining the smoothness of licorice and the benefits of honey.
Some sites are to be seen in Saint-Gély-du-Fesc as the archaeological sites of the Vautes, the Rouergas and the Hill of the Dead Man, the parish church Saint-Gilles whose bell is classified to the Historical Monuments and the park of Coulondres sheltering remarkable species Mediterranean and a particularly rich flora.
But Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, it is especially a village that moves and where there is always something to do. Very dynamic, the municipality organizes throughout the year cultural and sporting events that met a great success. Local feast, mini-féria or the election of Miss Pic du Loup find an ever-increasing number of people. Perhaps you will be part of it on occasion? You will have the opportunity to stroll through the alleys of its themed markets. In the autumn, the market for plantations and terroirs occupies the village square. In spring, the Spring Market is set up as part of the Mail of the Devoiselle. The plantations are always on the program, whatever the season.
The sporting matches follow one another, but they are not alike. You can attend the football tournament, the basketball tournament, the volleyball night or the show jumping competition during the course of the year. Sports enthusiasts are in the spotlight at Saint-Gély-du-Fesc and you can enjoy sports facilities to practice.
Saint-Gély-du-Fesc organizes numerous events throughout the year. Various and varied, they allow to satisfy all the passions of the enthusiastic visitors. Everything begins on the first weekend of June with the living room hunting nature. Bringing together 90 booths and 1,200 hunting dogs each year, the crowd floods every thousand to attend this festival between tradition and nature. In the course of these two days, you will be able to enjoy many activities such as an equestrian show, a demonstration of the Hunting Horn Sonners of the Duchy of Nivernais or a crew of great venery.
In November, come to the craft fair of art. Organized just before Christmas, this show is for you the opportunity to find gifts or just to take the opportunity to please you. About fifty creators propose you their novelties. Bag, perfume, shoe and many others wait wisely that the public wants to discover them. This talent show promises pleasant encounters and bargains.
Finally, the annual book fair is held annually and brings together thousands of works, including the oldest dating from the sixteenth century. Amateurs of the genre will be delighted to meet at the Georges Brassens space to flip over no less than 15,000 books.
An unmissable sporting event of the year, the kilometers of Saint-Gély bring together no fewer than 800 riders each September. Courses of different levels, motivated amateur athletes and an atmosphere of madness are the assets of this emotional day.
La Devoiselle - Ensemble Clément Janequin & les Sacqueboutiers
- On 26 april 2024
- Eglise saint gilles
- L ? homme armé, tears and alarms - The program for this concert revolves around the character of L'homme armé, a song that appeared around the middle of the 15th century, no doubt in the wake of the new orders of chivalry, valorizing the warrior who died in battle, with the Requiem by Pierre de La Rue (c. 1460-1518), enriched by those of Jean Richafort (c. 1480-c. 1547) and Antoine Fevin (1470-1512), and followed by a mass of thanksgiving in tribute to him. This is a parody mass on the various themes of famous musical battles of their time, composed by : Pierre de La Rue, Jean de Bournonville (c. 1585-1632), Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina (c. 1525-1594), Pedro Bermúdes (1558-1605) and Clément Janequin (1558-1605). From lamentation to jubilation, the diversity of compositional forms, the range of casts from two to eight voices, and the association of voices and instruments reveal the richness of practices and the wide palette of colors typical of Renaissance music.

But since Impressionism, art has moved away from copying idealized nature to become a place of invention and singularity. - In modern art, nature is reinterpreted, decomposed and dematerialized, sometimes to the point of becoming no more than a medium or a tool. In contemporary art, artists ? Relationships with nature reflect the ever-present environmental issues. - For the general public - Duration : 1h - Free - Registration required (free seating). - Conference organized by the Culture and Heritage Department of the Communauté de communes du Grand Pic Saint-Loup.
