The peat bog is of great botanical interest, which is why it has been protected by a biotope decree since 1985, the first Prefectoral Order for the Protection of Biotope of Savoy. More recently in 2009, it also benefited from a Natura 2000 ranking, thus integrating a network of natural sites of Community interest on a European scale. Natura 2000 is a concerted management tool for which peatland management actions are discussed within a steering committee chaired by the Saint-François-de-Sales Town Hall.
The bog of the Creusates constitutes by its surface and its biological diversity, one of the three main peat bogs of Savoy. Peat bogs of this type (acid peat bogs) are relatively rare and small in the Northern Alps compared to those of the Jura or Massif Central. The natural environments present in the Creusates are the testimony of the climatic conditions prevailing in Europe in the postglacial area. Home to many rare species of fauna and flora, this wetland evolves over the centuries, from the state of water to that of peat bog. It is thanks to its flora, and in particular the pollen trapped within the layers of peat, that it is possible to trace the evolution of the landscapes and vegetations of the site these last thousands of years.
