Located in the heart of the Center-Val de Loire, in the Cher department, Saint-Florent-sur-Cher is one of the municipalities covered by the hiking trail of Champagne country Berry. It takes place about twenty kilometers from Bourges, not far from Civray and Villeneuve-sur-Cher.

Formerly a Gallo-Roman village, the municipality of Saint-Florent-sur-Cher developed between the 11th and 13th centuries, becoming a seigniory of great importance in the region. But it was in the nineteenth century, with the construction of a viaduct and the arrival of a railroad, that the city took off, adopting the aspect it still has today to its visitors.

Full of charm, this old mining and industrial city still reveals a charming architectural heritage testifying to a rich and long history.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument, the castle of Saint-Florent-sur-Cher is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Built in the 13th century and extensively reworked over time, it served as a control center for the work of mariners and floats of the Royal Navy. Today property of the town, it hosts the town hall. We can still see a dungeon of the fifteenth century, a chapel, a dovecote, and a beautiful body of Louis XII style home.

Rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, the Saint-Florent church stands on the remains of an eleventh-century religious building destroyed in 1850. It has an interesting Gothic style.

Partly listed as a Historical Monument, the Lavoirs metallurgical plant can still be admired today.

The town has several bridges built on the remains of the original Gallo-Roman buildings. One can admire the remains of the ruins of the old stone bridge near the island.
