The Saint-Médard de Champaissant church is located in the commune of Saint-Cosme-en-Vairais, in the Sarthe department, 11 km southwest of Mamers.
The building served the parish of the village of Champaissant, southwest of the current town, and which merged in 1965 with the communes of Saint-Cosme-de-Vair and Contres.
Protected as a historic monument, the church dates from the 12th and 16th centuries and has retained a Romanesque appearance. Its single nave with a flat apse was once lit by modest windows. Its singularity and charm come from the wooden porch (called "balet") protecting the front gate. The faithful lingered there after the services to discuss... This is why in the Loire Valley this type of porch is also called a "caquetoire".
This development is later than the rest of the building and dates from the 16th century.
The church also houses a wooden stall from the 18th century and a bench from the 17th century, the beautiful workmanship of which justifies their being classified as an object. Finally, note that the bell tower contains a bell cast by the famous Nicolas Duval in 1649.
To visit during a walk in this characterful village which has other sites of interest.
