Saint-Christol

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Vaucluse

Village of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, Saint-Christol takes place in the heart of the plateau of Albion, about thirty kilometers from Apt. Steeped in history, it is located in typically Mediterranean landscapes, not far from Gignac and Oppedette.

Populated since the Neolithic, as evidenced by traces found on the spot, the territory of Saint-Christol has also experienced significant Roman colonization in antiquity, after being dominated by the Albic tribe who gave his name to the plateau. The city develops from the eleventh century, becoming land count in the sixteenth. Today, Saint-Christol is known to house a section of the Foreign Legion in the former base of strategic installations.

Full of charm, the village reveals to its visitors a traditional architecture mainly based on stone, as well as a heritage that seduces the tourists and the inhabitants of the region.

Things to see and do

Composed of a Romanesque part and a Gothic part, the Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Christophe church was largely renovated in the second half of the 17th century. His apse reveals an extraordinary setting, with a psychomachy of good and evil. Visitors can admire various monsters such as sphinx or sirens against rabbits, lions and other pelicans. It is now classified as an historic monument.

Opened in the late 2000s, the museum Marceau Constantin presents the work of this painter of the country, student of André Lhote or Ossip Zadkine.

Walking through the village, you can appreciate the traditional architecture through including the mill Reynier built in the nineteenth century, fountains, or the remains of an angle of the old castle.

Take time to admire the old stone houses, such as houses in height or length, typical of the region, and let yourself be seduced by the Chapel of Our Lady of Amaron.

The surrounding landscapes of Saint-Christol are perfect for a few family hikes. The town and its surroundings are also known to be an important caving spot through the Souffleur hole, the François Autan avenue, or the avenue de la Cervy. A professional organization present on site offers initiations and outings for the most experienced.
