Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye

If the tourism of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is mainly oriented towards the craftsmanship of sandstone and pottery, the small town of just over 1300 inhabitants also has some beautiful historical monuments.

Considered one of the most important in the Nivernais during the Renaissance, the castle of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye was rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century by the son of a chamberlain of François I. It replaces an old feudal fortress destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century. Today, this beautiful building, listed as a Historic Monument, houses the sandstone museum dedicated to ceramics. In particular, you can discover an interesting collection of utilitarian stoneware retracing four centuries of history, as well as works by artists such as Jean Carriès. Temporary exhibitions and descriptions of working with clay are also on the program of this interesting museum.

Built in the 13th century and greatly modified in the course of the 16th century, the Saint-Amand church has also been listed as a Historic Monument. Inside, murals dating from 1530 were brought to light during restorations. The latter, a fresco, are completed with oil paintings in the chapel dedicated to Mary. Its typical architecture of this part of the Nièvre deserves visitors to linger.

Facing its traditions, Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is an opportunity to discover interesting animations, including pottery and work.
