Things to see and do

Although the village of Royère-de-Vassivière is best known for its verdant nature and its mid-mountain landscapes, it does have some beautiful examples of architectural and cultural heritage.

Lake Vassivière is the main tourist attraction of the village of Royère-de-Vassivière. The largest lake in Limousin with more than 1,000 hectares, it is also the region's leading leisure and sports center. In the heart of unspoilt nature, where moorlands and heather mingle, visitors can enjoy the five supervised beaches or have fun with the various activities on offer. Water skiing, sailing, fishing, hiking or mountain biking, horseback riding or mushroom picking are also available. On the island of Vassivière, in the center of the lake, one can discover the international center of art and landscape and its wood of sculptures. The latter regularly hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.

The Saint-Germain church dates from the end of the 13th century, and one can appreciate a porch and a 15th century bell tower. It is listed as a Historical Monument since the early 1960s. Facing the church, on the Place de la Mayade, the fountain of Ceres, built in 1871, presents the Goddess surrounded by lion heads.

Lovers of unspoiled nature and outdoor activities will enjoy a ride through the Devil's Channel. This agitated river with many boulders is indeed a popular site for hikers and fishermen. The interpretation trails of the Mazure peat bog and the Lande du Puy de la Croix are essential hikes to appreciate the typical landscapes of the Millevaches plateau.

Not far from the village, one can also discover the Toad Stone, an erratic block.

Also not to be missed is the Magadou cross, made of granite. The latter dates from the 16th century and is located near the remains of the castle of Royère-de-Vassivière.
