Rougemont is a village in the Doubs region in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, 50 km northeast of Besançon, on the border of the Haute-Saône.
If traces of habitat dating from the Gallo-Roman period were discovered, the locality reached its apogee at the end of the medieval time when the lords of Rougemont occupied a powerful castle established on a promontory. It was here that in 1439 the brotherhood of Saint-Georges was founded, an order of chivalry which brought together the principal members of the nobility of Franche-Comte. If the order lasted until the Revolution, for lack of heir, the lineage of the lords of Rougemont disappeared before the end of the 15th century and the lands then passed under the domination of different families.
There is no vestige of the fortress but the old center of the village retains a typical appearance.
The economic activity formerly turned towards viticulture remains today mainly agricultural. With a population of nearly 1,200 inhabitants, the town is a "city of character" that also demonstrates a dynamic commercial and artisanal while highlighting its historical and natural heritage, making it an interesting stage for those visiting the region.
In terms of built heritage, the former convent of the Cordeliers (now a health establishment), founded in the 15th century and reworked, retains several original features such as its walls and chapels.
The Church of the Nativity of Notre-Dame, known as the Church of the Crotot (15th century), private mansions built within or near the Citadel, a fountain, halls and a wash house of the 19th century also deserve the blow look.
