Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Hautes-Alpes

Rosans takes place in the extreme west of the department of Hautes-Alpes, at the limit of that of the Drôme. This village of about 500 inhabitants is part of the Parc Naturel des Baronnies Provençales, in the arrondissement of the town of Gap.

Former capital of the Pagus Rosanensis in the Gallo-Roman period, the commune of Rosans was built in amphitheater on the slope of a hill. Attached to the Dauphiné at the beginning of the 14th century, the village was heavily affected during the wars of religion, especially at the end of the 16th century when it was taken by the Huguenots. At the end of the Algerian war, Rosans was also illustrated as the only voluntary commune in France for the reception of the harkis.

Full of charm, the commune of Rosans has retained a feudal architecture much appreciated by visitors, and one can appreciate its monuments and its style during a walk in its narrow streets.

Things to see and do

Built in blocks of diamond-cut stones, the square tower of Rosans has suffered many outrages over time. Inscribed in the Historical Monuments, it has walls four meters thick, and stand facing each of the cardinal points. It has the particularity to mark the hour of noon when three of its sides are in the shade.

As you walk through Rosans, you will appreciate its numerous arched alleyways, as well as its medieval streets. Do not miss to admire the castle of Lesdiguières or the church of Saint-Arey and its bell tower of the early eighteenth century. Fountains, laundries, crafted doors, and beautiful residences are thus the program of this very attractive village. In summer, guided tours are offered daily by the ecomuseum.

It is still possible today to borrow part of the covered walk way to admire the municipality and its surroundings.

The Natural Park of Baronnies Provençales offers several hiking trails to enjoy the fauna and flora, as well as an astronomical observatory.
