Roeschwoog is an Alsatian town of the Bas-Rhin, in the Greater East region, located forty kilometers north-east of Strasbourg.
The municipal territory is close to the banks of the Rhine, which has the value of border line with Germany.
Roeschwoog has nearly 2300 inhabitants. The population grew somewhat in the 1980s after the development of several housing estates. The municipality is therefore residential, and if SMEs are established, agriculture and craftsmanship remain perennial.
Highlighting its environmental heritage as historic, Roeschwoog is an interesting tourist stop in northern Alsace.
In terms of built heritage, in the center of the town, besides some traditional half-timbered houses, the visitor will notice inside the church of Saint Bartholomew (dating from 1767) a organ classified by Michel Stiehr (early nineteenth) Restored in 1988.
In the cemetery next to the building, there is also a small fifteenth chapel with the arms of the Fleckenstein family, whose castle is located in the Vosges du Nord but which once owned the lands of Roeschwoog.
Much more recent are the vestiges of the Maginot Line erected before the Second World War in the hope of containing a German invasion. Two casemates are visible in the village, Roeschwoog being the starting point of a hiking trail a hundred kilometers long that takes the route of the Maginot Line to Bitche (Moselle). Decidedly positioned on a strategic axis, Roeschwoog is also among the municipalities crossed by the European Véloroute du Rhin (EV 15) which connects the source of the river in Switzerland to its mouth in the Netherlands.
To these two itineraries are added other paths or walks of less long duration, to be taken on foot or by mountain bike, at the start or including the village and its surroundings, hilly to the west and staked to the east of gravel pits (Due to the bed of the Rhine), as the protected areas of the Moder and the Roselière.
