The castle of Pujols, in Gironde, in the town of the same name located a few kilometers south of Castillon-la-Bataille, on the left bank of the Dordogne (not to be confused with Pujols-sur-Ciron, near Langon, along the Garonne, in the Sauternes region), dates from the 14th and 15th centuries.
The building is mentioned during the Hundred Years War as having been taken by the French army commanded by the count of Eu, Raoul in 1338 then, in 1417, as integrated into the royal domain of England. The castle then looked like a polygon surrounded by ditches on three sides.
It will belong until the Revolution to the family of Durfort, lords of Duras.
For several centuries, a bridge linked the castle to the village, the current village square occupying the site of the old farmyard and certain "advanced" defensive elements... The main courtyard, for its part, occupied the center of the castle, and it was flanked by bastions and square towers which were destroyed in 1789.
The curtain walls are supported by large buttresses, most of them surmounted by watchtowers. Others were once to be surmounted by a walkway.
Nowadays, a large main building extends the tower.
In the 19th century, meanwhile, the castle undergoes alterations to accommodate the town hall. The enclosure is level. The connection between the square keep and the access door that it protected is walled up, and the ditch which separated the site from the village is filled in.
The north facade, facing the steep slopes of the territory, presents itself as a main building flanked by hexagonal watchtowers. The old main room, now the council room, contains a vast 15th century fireplace supporting a lintel surmounted by a cornice.
