The Alfred-Canel museum is located at Pont-Audemer, in the Eure region.
It was created in 1884 after the lawyer, writer and local historian Alfred Canel (1803-1879) bequeathed his collections (books and works of art) to the city. He had already been at the origin of the creation of the municipal library of Pont-Audemer in 1836.
This and a first museum were housed in his house at the end of the 19th century.
The site, renovated in the early 2000s, now includes old library holdings, Alfred Canel's study and an arts and sciences gallery where collections of natural sciences, local archeology and fine arts. On the first floor, are presented collections of artistic works, archeology, natural sciences. Norman artists specializing in landscapes (Precrus, the Binet brothers), artists from the Rouen school but also paintings from the beginning of the 20th century are on display. Sculptures, archaeological treasures and natural science collections are also highlighted. In addition, a large library of 15,000 works (the oldest dating from the 15th century) is on display.
Upstairs, temporary exhibitions dedicated in particular to contemporary art are scheduled.
The establishment is labeled "Musée de France" and "Maison d'écrivain". Open every day except Tuesday from May to September and every day Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from October to April. Free entry (except for guided tours and conferences: 2.50 euros). Information on +33 2 32 41 08 15.
