The Sainte-Marie-du-Ménez-Hom chapel is located at Plomodiern, coastal town of Finistère, 15 km north-east of Douarnenez.
The Ménez Hom is a small summit that belongs to the chain of Black Mountains and culminates at 330 m above sea level, north of the village.
The Sainte-Marie chapel was erected in 1570 on the ruins of an old Romanesque chapel, in the middle of the moors. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1916, it is surrounded by an enclosure with a triumphal arch of the eighteenth century and a cross with three crosses. Its beautifully carved bell tower is also of the eighteenth century, with two galleries, crowned with a lantern dome. Inside the chapel, with collaterals, one of the most beautiful altarpieces of the region, Baroque style, testifies to the prosperity of the site where once was a great fair. The building is also rich of three altars, bas-reliefs, and an important statuary. We will also notice the decoration decorating the vault.
A pardon is held on August 15th.
The chapel is open every day from April 1st to October 31st. Guided tours on request. Information on +33 2 98 81 27 37.
