Carheil castle was located in the town of Plessé, in Loire-Atlantique, 21 km south-east of Redon.
The site was mentioned for the first time in 1407 when the daughter of the lord of the place married the knight Guillaume Giffart. Later, at the beginning of the 17th century, the daughter of Michel de Carheil and his wife Jacquette de Kerveno married a knight of the order of the king and in 1659, the seigneury of Carheil was established as a viscount. The venerable fortified castle was transformed shortly after into a pleasant Louis XIII-style castle, with a large main building flanked by pavilions.
But in 1842, the owner family was ruined and the estate was acquired by the Prince of Joinville, son of King Louis-Philippe. Remodeled, the castle is then plastered, equipped with terraces and a chapel whose stained-glass windows come from the Sèvres factory, made from drawings by Ingres.
Subsequently, until the Second World War, different owners succeeded each other before, in 1945, the castle was not destroyed by fire.
Only the chapel remains to this day, which was listed in the Inventory in 1980.
The outbuildings for their part were also burnt down, but more recently.
The entire site and its large estate were acquired by a joint ownership of some 300 members. Plots have been subdivided. The chapel, which was restored in 2020, is open to the public from time to time, especially during Heritage Days in September.
