Community of nearly 3 700 inhabitants, Plélan-le-Grand takes place in Brittany, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. Located on the edge of the forest of Paimpont, it is located in the arrondissement of Rennes. The village is located at the same distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the Channel Sea.

According to historians, the commune was born in the ninth century following the construction of religious buildings by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Melaine in Rennes. Until the French Revolution, Plélan-le-Grand had the peculiarity of seeing the south of its territory constituted into a sort of republic. Even today, this former autonomous place has the appearance of a small country town.

Plélan-le-Grand is now best known for its built heritage, as well as for its natural sites that make the visitors happy.

Things to see and do

Several ponds take place on the commune of Plélan-le-Grand, allowing to make beautiful walks or to settle down the time of a picnic. You will be able to discover the ponds of Trégu, Trécouët, Perray, or Forges. The latter has a small beach very appreciated of the premises.

Built in the middle of the 19th century, the Saint-Pierre church takes its place on the remains of an ancient 13th-century religious building. From the original site you can still admire the beautiful Sainte-Anne chapel, while on the north side, a 17th-century tower stands as a bell tower.

As you walk through the town, you can discover the town hall in the old halls or the fountain of Saint Fiacre, patron saint of the farmers.

Part of the Paimpont Forges takes place at Plélan-le-Grand. Registered as a Historical Monument, it is a former industrial site that once represented the largest wooden forges in the whole of Brittany. It is possible to visit the site via a free route or during guided tours retracing the history of the places.

Events and festivities

The market, one of the biggest in the whole department, is held every Sunday morning.

In September, place at the festival of Charbons Ardents dedicated to the circus.

The Festival des Bonnes Z'ambiances, with its various concerts, is also held in September.

At the end of the year, the municipality offers a Christmas market.
