Cistercian-Trappist monastery, the Abbey of Our Lady of Tamié takes place in the Bauges massif, in the town of Plancherine, Savoie. Near Albertville, it is located not far from the Col de Tamié, 900 meters above sea level.
The abbey Notre-Dame de Tamié was founded in 1132 by a group of monks from the abbey of Bonnevaux led by Saint Pierre de Tarentaise. Suppressed in 1793, however, the monastic life resumed in 1861 in buildings newly built by Trappist monks of the Abbey of Grace-God. Always present, the current community has about twenty-five monks. It is also from this abbey that came two Tibhirine monks killed in Algeria in 1996 in mysterious conditions. The monks of Tamié have notably ensured the songs of the divine service of the film of Xavier Beauvois, Men and Gods.
The site has a twenty-seven-room hotel that can accommodate people wishing to retire for a spiritual retreat, while other premises are available to host groups of young people.
The monks of Notre-Dame de Tamié are famous for their cheese, the tamie, which they produce about 400 kg each day. The cheese factory remains the main source of income for the abbey.
If the abbey Notre-Dame de Tamié does not visit, place of worship obliges, the site proposes a few meters before the monastery, near the carpark, a center of reception unveiling in particular a video montage on the life of the monks, and a shop selling religious books and monastic products. It is also possible to attend the services to pray with the monks of the abbey.
