Commune of Occitanie located in the department of Haute-Garonne, Pibrac takes place in the urban area of Toulouse, not far from La Teste-de-Buch and Colomiers. Verte, the town welcomes partly on its territory the forest of Bouconne.
Occupied by a castrum at the beginning of the twelfth century, the territory of Pibrac gradually developed into a village, then into a seigneurie. Under the influence of the knights of the Order of the Hospitallers during a part of the Middle Ages, the Occitan commune is illustrated in the sixteenth century thanks to Germaine Cousin. Shepherdess became St. Germaine after being found entirely intact in the middle of the seventeenth century. She is now buried in Pibrac in a basilica built for her.
Its geographical location close to the tourist sites of Toulouse and its religious heritage make Pibrac a municipality appreciated by visitors visiting the region.
Classified as Historic Monuments, the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine dates from the thirteenth century. Partly rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century, it still has a bell-tower of the original building. In addition to the relics of Saint Germaine, one can discover several elements classified to the Historical Monuments as the organ, the altarpiece, the bas-reliefs in gilded wood of the eighteenth century, the tabernacle, the altar or of two marble statues.
Built at the end of the 19th century, the basilica of Sainte-Germaine is dedicated to the little miraculous shepherdess born in Pibrac. Roman-Byzantine style, it takes place on the remains of an old chapel. Completed in the late 1960s, the building is still an important place of pilgrimage to St. Germaine.
The castle of Pibrac was completely rebuilt in the first half of the sixteenth century, then restored in the nineteenth century because of the destruction inflicted during the French Revolution. In red brick, it is a Renaissance-style building listed in the Historic Monuments. It reveals a cabinet of Quatrains with beautiful vaults decorated with mythological subjects of the XVIth century and a beautiful chimney of bricks adorned with a Renaissance cartridge. Its park, open to the public, presents a very refined style with terraces and basins. Inscribed in the pre-inventory of Remarkable Gardens, it presents a beautiful English garden. It is also home to the famous Henry IV Gate, a red brick triumphal arch, another major tourist site in the commune of Pibrac.
Do not miss to go discover the remains of the former priory Saint Dominic of Pibrac.
