Château Lafite Rothschild is a winery located in the commune of Pauillac, in Gironde.
It includes a castle built in the eighteenth century and some 178 hectares of land of which 103 are dedicated to the vineyard. The wine produced in the property under the name Pauillac is one of the most prestigious in the Bordeaux region and is one of the few estates classified "first grand cru" since 1855.
Belonging to the end of the Middle Ages to the noble family La Fite, ally of the count of Foix, the property is acquired in the seventeenth century by the family of Ségur and the estate wine is planted around 1680. Before the Revolution, its reputation is such that It is already appreciated at the court of Versailles from 1760. It is quickly nicknamed "the wine of the King".
The castle and its vineyards were bought in 1868 by Baron James de Rothschild, businessmen and banker.
Regarding the castle, built in the eighteenth century on the foundations of an old manor, it has retained elements of Louis XV style (banister, wood paneling) and was embellished in the nineteenth in a Napoleon III style (decor and furniture). The whole is raised on important vaulted cellars connected by galleries.
The estate is protected as historical monuments.
