Church Notre-Dame-de-Compassion

Monument in Paris

Located in the 17th district of Paris, near the Porte Maillot metro station, the Notre-Dame-de-Compassion church is a building now classified as an historic monument. Formerly called the Saint-Ferdinand Chapel, it was built in the first half of the 19th century on the plans of the king's architect, Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine, on the site of the house where the son of King Louis-Philippe died., Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orleans.

Built in the shape of a Latin cross, it reveals an impressive Neo-Byzantine style to welcome the remains of the prince. Inside, stained glass windows made by Ingres present the faces of the king and the queen in the form of saints. It is also possible to admire a cenotaph carved by Henry de Triqueti and representing the Duke of Orleans at the time of his last moments.

Threatened with destruction during the War of 1870, Notre-Dame-de-Compassion Church was saved by General François de Chabaud-Latour, former comrade-in-arms of the Duke of Orleans. In 1974, during the construction of the Porte Maillot convention center, the building was entirely moved by a hundred meters and rebuilt stone by stone to the same.
