A 12th century medieval building located in the Ariège, the Pailhès castle takes place on a rocky promontory and serves as an entrance to the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège Pyrenees. Remodeled during the Renaissance, then in the 18th century, it is one of the oldest castles still in condition after that of Foix.
A fine example of medieval military architecture, it now has a completely original and unique look due to its successive modifications. Private property not accessible to visitors, the castle of Pailhès has retained its 14th century home flanked by a turret with a wooden spiral staircase. Inside, the guard room houses 16th century graffiti, while further on, stand the orangery and the chapel listed as Historic Monuments.
