The largest municipality in Pas-de-Calais, Oye-Plage takes place on the edge of the North Sea, in the maritime plain of Flanders. It is located on the edge of the Nord department, not far from Calais, Dunkirk and Saint-Omer-Capelle.

Ancient, the municipality of Oye-Plage has however kept few vestiges of its past. Formerly dependent on the county of Boulogne, it passed from hand to hand over the centuries, becoming the property of the counts of Artois, the English and then the kings of France. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century and the fashion for sea bathing that this city in northern France experienced a real boom, particularly with the construction of villas and a casino.

Things to see and do

If Oye-Plage has seen a good part of its wealth destroyed over the centuries, it nevertheless has some beautiful testimonies of its past. While passing through the seaside resort, you can notably discover the Saint-Médard church. The oldest monument in the town, it was erected during the English occupation in the 16th century. In particular, you can admire a corner tower from 1533 with a stone spiral staircase leading to a terrace which offers a breathtaking view of the sea. Formerly a fortified church, as evidenced by the loopholes, it was largely transformed in the 19th century. century, notably with the addition of side naves. Inside, visitors can admire a main nave paved with Belgian marble, as well as a very old sandstone baptismal basin.

While strolling along the coast, you can also discover some blockhouses from the Second World War: anti-tank walls, sentry boxes, casemates or shelters. The most original is surely the Leaning Tower. In the shape of a church tower, it was erected by the Germans to deceive the English airmen who came to bomb enemy targets.

Before leaving the town, let yourself be seduced by its exceptional landscapes. Located by the sea, the Platier d'Oye national nature reserve is worth a stop. On 391 hectares accessible with or without a guide, you can admire the local fauna and flora. Several marked hiking trails are also accessible from the city or its surroundings.
