The garden of the Château de Chaumont is located in the town of Oyé, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, 20 km south-east of Paray-le-Monial.
The site located to the north-east of the town was the seat of a seigniory owned for a time by the Abbey of Cluny.
The estate was acquired in 1748 by Jean Circaud, the king's secretary, who had the current castle built, then the whole estate passed to the Marais family in 1818, who still own it.
The castle follows a U-shaped plan and includes earlier elements. In addition, a large barn from the 16th century was transformed at the beginning of the 20th century into a reception room with stones from the same period from the demolition of the Château de Moulin l'Arconce.
The facades have a rich carved decoration.
As for the exteriors, vast of 7 hectares, the French gardens dating from the 18th century were restored at the beginning of the 20th century. They only cover three hectares. We observe from the castle to the access gate an alley lined with flowerbeds, pruned yews, sculpted elements and vases. Further away are alleys of lime trees.
On either side of the chateau, grassy flowerbeds, sculptures, cut shrubs (topiary art) and arbors make up a neat decor. Just as elegant is the shaded room formed by chestnut trees planted in a rectangle!
Open to the public in August, every day except Tuesday, and from mid-May to mid-October for groups by reservation. Self-guided or guided tour including part of the castle. Price: 4 euros. Information on +33 3 85 25 80 76.
