City of Hauts-de-France, Orchies takes place in the department of North, about twenty kilometers from Lille. World capital of chicory, it is located near Douai and Tournai, about thirty kilometers from Valenciennes. It is part of the Regional Natural Park Scarpe-Escaut.
Invaded at the end of the 13th century by Philip the Fair, Orchies became French property at the beginning of the 14th century by the Treaty of Athis-sur-Orge. Recovered by Flanders in 1370, it will definitively join the kingdom of France in 1668 thanks to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. Entirely destroyed during World War I battles, the city was decorated with the 1914-1918 war cross in 1920. It was also received for the 1939-1945 war after being destroyed by German troops again.
If Orchies has little heritage, it still retains a certain charm, and an animation that still attracts many visitors wanting to better know this part of northern France.
