Nogent Cutlery Museum in Haute-Marne.
“It’s a nice knife… but it’s a Nogent!” exclaims the character of Roubaud in the film “The Human Beast” by Jean Renoir (1938). This shows that the town of Nogent - the name Nogent-en-Bassigny has not been used since 1972 - has acquired a solid reputation since its name alone is enough to identify quality cutlery; refinement and diversity characterize this world-renowned cutlery, requested by major French houses such as Christofle and Hermès.
Created to highlight an identity heritage, the cutlery museum presents, in a modern setting, the technical and social history of this traditional activity from the 18th century to the present day. Installed in a former cutlery factory, the museum also promotes new technologies, the fruit of traditional know-how now renewed.
Note: the term "cutlery", used generically, covers the seven major classes of cutlery:
- Closing cutlery: pocket knives, hunting knives, nail knives, etc.
- Table cutlery: table knives, cutting sets, etc.
- Professional cutlery: butcher knives, kitchen knives, etc.
- Scissors: embroidery scissors, tailor scissors, etc.
- Hand tools: grafters, pruners, etc.
- Surgical instrumentation: forceps, retractors, etc.
- Toiletries: tweezers, manicure, etc.
