Niaux - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Ariège

Small village of Ariège, in the Occitanie region, Niaux takes place in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège Pyrenees, in the valley of Vicdessos. It is located in the district of Foix, not far from Tarascon-sur-Ariège, Larnat and Ussat.

Populated since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of the decorated cave, the territory of Niaux has mainly developed around its forges dating back to the time of the Counts of Foix and which today are specialized in the manufacture of records for agricultural machinery.

Today, this small village in southwestern France is mainly geared towards tourism, offering visitors a rich cultural, historical and natural heritage.

Things to see and do

Dating from the Upper Paleolithic, the cave of Niaux, now classified as an historic monument, is the town's main tourist attraction. Open to the public, it unveils very beautiful Madgalenian parietal figures to be discovered during fascinating guided tours. Stretching over two kilometers, it reveals spacious galleries, low vaults and underground lakes. The highlight of the visit, the Salon Noir, a large rotunda with an impressive vaulted ceiling, allows you to discover more than seventy paintings of bison, deer, ibex and other horses.

While strolling through the village, you can also admire the beautiful Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Vincent the Spanish or the remains of the old manor-castle and its fortification near the Alliat bridge.

The town also has a very interesting Pyrenean museum retracing the history of the region.
