Natzwiller

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Bas-Rhin

Charming little Alsatian village, Natzwiller takes place in the Bas-Rhin, about fifty kilometers from Strasbourg and its sumptuous cathedral. It is located in the heart of the Bruche valley, on the north bank of the Rothaine valley, not far from Barembach, Rothau or Schirmeck.

Barembach parish annex from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, the commune of Natzwiller subsequently gained its independence. It developed thanks to the presence of the forges of Rothau, not far away, which enabled it to gradually take on the face that we know today.

Sadly famous for having hosted the only Nazi concentration camp in France, Natzwiller has become a high place of memory.

Things to see and do

Entirely rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century, the Saint-Genès church reveals an original architecture mixing the antique and Renaissance style. Not far away, it is possible to admire the Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes chapel. In neo-Gothic architecture, this building from the end of the 19th century has a gable bay formed by projecting embrasures and a rounded arch.

Natzwiller has wished, over the years, to become a high place of memory linked to the Second World War. In 1960, the municipality inaugurated at Struthof, a former Nazi concentration camp, a memorial to the martyrs and heroes of the deportation as well as a national necropolis. A European Center for Deported Resistance Members was also created there in 2005. Visitors will be able to discover the site in its original form and immerse themselves in the darkest hours of modern history.

But it is also for its natural heritage that the Alsatian town is appreciated. Several hiking trails allow you to appreciate the surrounding landscapes, like the Serva waterfall. Do not hesitate either to take the botanical path bordered in particular by different varieties of hardwoods and conifers.

Sliding sports enthusiasts will enjoy taking a trip to the Champ du Feu, the only downhill ski resort in the Bas-Rhin. Culminating at more than 1000 meters, it offers 17 alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledding trails.

Events and festivities

In July, place at Messti de Natzwiller with carnival and festive meal.

A Christmas concert is offered every year in December in the Saint-Genès church.
