Mundolsheim

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Bas-Rhin

Common Bas-Rhin, Mundolsheim takes place between 137 and 184 meters above sea level, just a few kilometers from Strasbourg and its famous cathedral. It is located near Hoenheim, Dingsheim and Vendenheim.

Populated since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the remains found on the spot, the territory of Mundolsheim is quoted as a village proper at the beginning of the 12th century. Theater of several battles at the time, especially during the Thirty Years War who saw the sack and the looting of the town, he also suffers from the pangs of the Dutch war. But it was in 1815, during the battle of Souffel-Hœnheim that the village knows its darkest hours, then returning to a period of great poverty.

Today very dynamic, the municipality of Mundolsheim attracts visitors by its proximity to the most beautiful cities in the region, but also by its architectural and cultural heritage.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument for its tower and eight gravestones, the Protestant church is one of the jewels of the town. Its interior gate is part of the original bell tower of the twelfth century, including the presence of fabulous animals. Inside, it is possible to discover the tombs of eight Johams of Mundolsheim, as well as three bells, the oldest of which dates from the second half of the 18th century.

The former town hall, built in the mid-nineteenth century, now houses the municipal library. It is located on the former site of the laube which was once used to watch the innkeepers.

Do not hesitate to walk in the old village which reveals beautiful half-timbered houses. Do not miss to admire the old school built in the eighteenth century, or the old forge.

While strolling in the surroundings, you will be able to discover the fort Desaix built by the Germans between 1870 and 1914 and which shelters today notably the Society of Shot of Strasbourg, or the strong Ducrot built between 1879 and 1882. Today in restored part, it is open to the public once a year in October, and on a guided tour on Saturday afternoon by appointment.

On the hillside, Gloeckelsberg Botanical Garden offers a magnificent panorama of Kochersberg and Strasbourg. The site allows to make a very beautiful and informative walk in the middle of the local flora. It is accessible via the track of the forts.
