Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Nord

A commune of nearly 14,000 inhabitants, Mouvaux takes place in the Hauts-de-France region, in the department of Nord. Located on the Lille / Tourcoing axis, it is also bordering Marcq-en-Barœul, Wasquehal, and Bondues.

Born in the XIIth century, the commune of Mouvaux passed from seigniory to seigniory over time, before becoming a city in its own right. In part the theater of the battle of Tourcoing which confronts French and Austrians at the end of the XVIIIth century, it knew a major industrial revolution a century later. Strongly affected by the pangs of the First and Second World Wars, the city was reborn from its ashes in 1945.

Benefiting from its geographical proximity to the biggest cities of the North, Mouvaux also attracts passing visitors to the region by its architectural heritage not lacking interest.

Things to see and do

Rebuilt at the end of the 19th century on the remains of a 13th century building, the church of Saint-Germain is the oldest of Mouvaux. The Neo-Romanesque style is characteristic of the Flemish architecture of the period, with brick and stonework. A few years later, a rich textile industrialist of the region, began the construction of the church of St. Francis. Consecrated in 1895, it also mixes bricks and white stones, but in a neo-Byzantine style rare at the time. More recently, the Sacré-Cœur church was completely redesigned in the 1960s.

Built at the end of the 17th century, the chapel of the Sick people still stands proudly in Mouvaux. Restored at the end of the 19th century, it blends the Louis XIII and Flemish styles with its slate roof and niches with shells loaded with fruits and flowers. In stones and red bricks, it is dominated by a charming bell-tower.

As you stroll through the city, do not miss out on the Grand Boulevard. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is lined with remarkable mansions and private mansions.

Former garden of the eclectic castle of Jules Masurel-Wattinne, now disappeared, the park of the Hautmont is very appreciated by the inhabitants of the city. Several hundred-year-old trees can be found, some of which are labeled Trees of nobility, as well as numerous trails.

True architectural prowess in its time, the water tower of Mouvaux dates from the late nineteenth century. The largest reservoir in the Lille agglomeration by its dimensions, it is still visible today.
