Moulins-la-Marche

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Orne

Moulins-la-Marche is a village in the Orne, in the Normandy region, 17 km north of Mortagne-au-Perche.

Presenting a landscape of grove, the history of the village is linked to its geographical position, on the border between the duchy of Normandy and the county of Perche.

A mound castrale defensive vocation is thus arranged since the eleventh century, then a real castle is built which becomes a strategic point during the Hundred Years War.

If the castle is destroyed in the fifteenth century, Moulins-la-Marche which, as the name suggests, is famous for its milling activity, remains a viscount until the Revolution.

During the second half of the twentieth century, the village took advantage of the installation in a neighboring town of the actor Jean Gabin who created a racecourse at Moulins-la-Marche.

With a population of just over 760, the village remains dynamic and a pleasant stop for green tourism enthusiasts.

Things to see and do

It remains from the old feudal mound only a few elements on the natural site on which it was built, overlooking the heart of the village. Long abandoned, the redeveloped space is the first heritage asset of the town.

A discovery of the town also includes the Church of St. Nicholas, which dates from the late nineteenth century.

On the historical level, during a walk, we will gather at the place called Clos Mottet in front of the stele commemorating the sacrifice of resistance fighters surprised by German soldiers during the Liberation, in August 1944.

In another area, we can look at the Jean-Gabin Racecourse, created in the 1950s by the actor who had settled in the area to raise cattle and horses. The site still belongs to his descendants. The racetrack hosts trotting meetings on the last Sunday of June, the first Sunday in July and the second Sunday in September. In parallel with the races, games for children are installed and are organized a flea market and exhibitions of tractors and old materials. Information on +33 2 33 24 63 44.

The racecourse as the heart of the village and its green surroundings can give rise to many hiking or mountain biking. Documentation and information on +33 2 33 28 88 71.

In the different streams or ponds that punctuate the territory, fishermen have something else to satisfy their passion. Contact +33 2 33 26 10 66 for the most adapted sites and the details of the regulations.

In terms of sports and recreation again, the town has petanque and multi-sports fields.

Finally, Moulins-la-Marche has a cinema, a rare equipment for a locality of this size, but which is animated by enthusiasts also keeping the memory of Jean Gabin. There is a scheduled session every first Friday of the month at 8:30 pm. Information on +33 6 23 43 60 09.
